Volunteering in Kalimantan, Indonesia

Alam Sehat Lestari, an Indonesian NGO with the dual goals of protecting Gunung Palung National Park and improving the health of human communities on its borders, is seeking a volunteer with expertise in the survey and identification of birds of Borneo. The volunteer would join Alam Sehat Lestari at its base in Sukadana, West Kalimantan, Indonesia to train our NGO staff in bird survey techniques and Gunung Palung National Park staff in bird identification to improve their skills as nature-tourist guides. The volunteer would help our staff to implement survey methodologies that will be used to monitor changes in the bird fauna before and after replanting lowland forest areas previously degraded by illegal logging and overtaken by alang-alang grassland.

The volunteer will gain experience working with a truly cutting-edge and promising joint conservation-healthcare program and contribute to its mission. He or she will have the opportunity to work in one of the most diverse and beautiful rainforests remaining on the planet and to see one of Southeast Asia’s most stunning bird faunas.

The volunteer should have expertise in the identification of Bornean birds. In addition, he or she must speak bahasa Indonesia and have confidence in teaching bird survey techniques to our staff and national park staff.

Minimum commitment: Two Months
Duration: ongoing
Period: Early 2011
